About Mike

Mike’s passion for electronics started at a young age, and it has shaped his entire career. After completing his schooling at Deutsche Schule Hermannsburg in 1982, he served in the army before pursuing formal studies in electronics. He spent three years at Wits Tech and completed his final year at Cape Town Tech, graduating with an S4 in Electrical Engineering (Light Current).

Returning to Johannesburg, Mike began his career at Siemens in the Process Computers division, where he spent nine years gaining valuable experience. He then moved to Unisys, taking on repair and fieldwork responsibilities across retail automation, workshop operations, and test lab environments. After 12 years, with limited opportunities for further growth, he accepted a retrenchment package and decided it was time for a new chapter.

Faced with the choice of returning to corporate employment or following his two greatest passions—electronics and music—Mike chose the latter. He launched a small one-man workshop inside Marshall Music in Wendywood, specialising in audio equipment repairs. Five years later, he was invited to open a larger workshop at TOMS in Braamfontein, expanding both his workspace and his team. After several successful years, and as TOMS downsized, Mike moved his operation to Strijdompark in Randburg, where he and his team now work from within Turnkey Music.

Alongside his technical career, Mike is an active musician, performing as part of a duo in and around Gauteng, and occasionally touring across South Africa.
